How to Pay for ChatGPT, Claude and Other Dollar Subscriptions in Nigeria (2026)

Netflix and Spotify bill in naira in Nigeria. ChatGPT Plus does not. Neither does Claude, Midjourney, or most of the tools you pay a foreign company for.

They bill abroad, usually in US dollars. That single fact causes most of the trouble Nigerians have with them, and it is the same trouble every time, whichever service it is.

What a foreign charge actually costs you

Take ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month. Your bank converts that $20 to naira at its own rate on the day the charge lands, and can add a cross-border fee on top. So the naira figure moves month to month even though the dollar price never changes.

Two things follow from that. Your budget is a moving target. And your card's international spending limit matters, because a $20 charge has to fit under whatever your bank currently allows for foreign transactions.

How to subscribe (the flow is the same everywhere)

Using ChatGPT Plus as the example:

1. Log in to chatgpt.com.
2. Open Settings, then Subscription, and choose Plus.
3. Enter your card details.
4. Use a billing address that matches your card.

Before you start, make sure your naira card works for international payments. Many Nigerian banks switched off international transactions on naira cards during the 2022 to 2023 forex squeeze and only turned them back on in 2025, usually with a quarterly dollar limit. Paying for Claude in Nigeria works exactly like ChatGPT: a naira card with international transactions enabled, or a dollar card funded ahead of the date. Same charge, same reasons it fails.

Twitch

Twitch is the exception worth knowing about. It uses local pricing, so the amount is shown in your local currency and varies by country rather than being a flat dollar figure. A Tier 1 channel subscription is around $5.99 a month in the US. On the Twitch mobile apps it costs more, roughly $7.99, because Apple and Google add their own cut, and that charge goes through your App Store or Google account rather than Twitch directly.

Other foreign subscriptions

Midjourney, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Notion and Figma mostly bill in dollars too. Watch for one trap that applies to Twitch as well: anything you buy through your Apple or Google account shows up as a single charge from Apple or Google, not from the app, so it hides in your statement even though it is still a foreign subscription underneath.

Keep a buffer. Whatever the charge costs today, plan for a bit more, because the rate will not wait for you.

Better still, stop holding the dates in your head. Subsecute tracks each renewal, reminds you before it lands, and pays from a naira balance you topped up when it suited you.
