How to Split a Netflix or Spotify Plan Without Chasing Anyone

Shared plans save real money, but only one person ever pays. Here is how to split a subscription so everyone's share actually arrives.

Funding someone's subscription with a shareable Pay-4-Me link

Shared plans are the best deal in subscriptions. Netflix Premium across four people. Spotify Family across six. On paper everyone pays a fraction.

In practice one person pays everything and quietly resents four people.

A month in the life of the person who pays

Picture a Spotify Family plan set up in Surulere in March. Six people: Tunji, his two sisters, a cousin in Yaba, and two friends from work. ₦2,500 total, about ₦417 each. Tunji's card is the one on the account.

March, everyone pays. April, four out of six. May, Tunji sends one message in the group chat and gets two thumbs-up reactions and one payment. June he does not bother.

By September he has covered roughly ₦10,000 of other people's music and is slightly annoyed at people he actually likes. Nobody was being difficult. There was just never a moment when sending ₦417 was the most important thing anyone had to do that day.

Why it always breaks

The plan renews on a fixed date. Your friends do not.

Someone is waiting for salary. Someone forgot. Someone genuinely thinks they already sent it. Meanwhile the bill does not care, so you cover it, and now you are owed money by people you like, which is the worst kind of debt to collect.

Then there is the awkward maths. Netflix Premium at ₦8,500 across four people is ₦2,125 each. Nobody sends ₦2,125. They send ₦2,000 and you eat the difference every month.

The ways people try to fix it

A group chat reminder. Works for two months. Then it becomes the message everyone scrolls past.

Collect a year upfront. Good luck.

One person pays and everyone "sorts it out later". This is the same as you paying.

Rotate who pays each month. Fair in theory. In practice month four is when someone's card fails and nobody notices until the account is suspended.

What actually works

The money has to move before the renewal date, and it has to move without anyone being asked.

In Subsecute a subscription can have more than one funder. Each person's share is set once, and it comes in ahead of the renewal. You can see who is in and who is not, before the date, not after. If someone drops out you find out with time to do something about it.

Nobody has to send a message. Nobody has to be the person sending the message.

Set. Automate. Relax.
